With the new academic year starting, savvy students know that one way to keep down their costs is to buy pre-owned textbooks- and to sell any old textbooks they know longer need The UK’s second largest auction site CQout (pronounced ‘Seek You Out’) is home to one of the largest booksellers on the web, with 200,000+ new and pre-owned books, comics and magazines, and a great place to sell your old textbooks.
As an example of the huge savings to be made, a copy of the latest edition of standard chemistry textbook “Organic & Biological Chemistry” is for sale through CQout at time of writing for £7.58- a saving of 85% on the current new price.
Launched in December 1999 by three London Business School alumni who knew from their own experience just how expensive textbooks could be, CQout has gained a reputation for being the ‘Most Trusted Online Auction Site’ and has established itself as a destination site for ‘pre-owned’ textbooks and a great place to buy new textbooks at rock-bottom prices.
“We’re pretty sure that the price you’ll find that textbook for on CQout will be below that you’ll see on the other well-known sites, and the reason for that is simple,” explains CQout MD Siamak Bashi. “We don’t charge our sellers listing fees, which means they have lower overheads and so can afford to sell for less, which of course makes them keen to sell on CQout rather than elsewhere.”
But CQout isn’t just a good place to buy textbooks. It’s also a good place to offer them for sale once you’ve finished with them as a way of recouping some of the cost of your studies.
Take that same copy of [book name] we just mentioned,” says Bashi. “Sitting on your bookshelf it’s worth nothing and you’ll probably never open it again. Offer it for sale on CQout and one of the next academic year’s students might well buy it from you- that’s money in your pocket from what would otherwise have been another ’sunk cost’ of the education process.”
With a ‘no sale, no fee’ policy for standard listings, it costs you nothing to list your old textbooks on CQout and offers a far wider marketplace than simply using the Students Union noticeboard.
