To raise funds for the ambitious Rs 500 crore Kolkata Museum of Modern Art (KMOMA) project, the chairman and board of trustees are organising a private sale of artworks by artists from across India.

The auction, at the Art Gallery, ITC The Sonar, will be held on Monday.

“In all, 24 artists from all over India from Paresh Maity, Yusuf Arakkal to Jogen Chowdhury have contributed artworks for the sale,” says Rakhi Sarkar, managing trustee, KMOMA.

Last July, KMOMA held an auction in New York and raised Rs 3 crore for the project.

“The West Bengal government has pitched in with Rs 138 crore, including land,” says Sarkar, adding, “the rest we are raising from various agencies and we also expect the Central government to participate in the project.”

At Monday’s auction, the KMOMA “hopes to raise some funds from the big corporates in Bengal, including ITC.”
