IROC Auction

Published March 9th, 2008

Auto racing fans lined up on Saturday at a public auction near the New Jersey shore of equipment and memorabilia from the International Race of Champions series.

Amongitems for sale were more than a dozen Pontiac Firebird-style race cars driven by stars such as Tony Stewart and 2008 Daytona 500 winner Ryan Newman. They were sold for between $50,000 and $75,000 each, according to IROC spokesman Jay Signore.

The IROC racing series was started by racing legend Roger Penske in 1973 to pit the world’s top drivers from racing’s different disciplines. The series was discontinued last year for lack of a title sponsor.
