Navajo tribe auction off slot machine rights

The Navajo Nation does not have casinos in Arizona, but has an agreement with the state, to a right to slot-machine revenue.

With plans for a new casino near Leupp, the tribe has auctioned off its excess slot machines to other Arizona tribes.

It’s the first time an Arizona tribe has done so as part of a pooling agreement, said Seena Simon, a spokeswoman for the Arizona Department of Gaming.

The auction was held last Wednesday in Arizona. Navajo officials say they expect to bring in over $140 million in the next 18 years as a result.
