Three of the most technically interesting and aesthetically beautiful European pre-war cars to feature within Bonhams’ inaugural Rétromobile Paris Sale, on 9 February 2008, will be a 1928 example of the legendary supercharged Type ‘S’ Mercedes, the world’s sole surviving, privately-owned Farman dating from 1921, and a gargantuan 10.6-litre 1905 Panhard-Lavassor.

Headlining the sale will be the 1928 Mercedes ‘S’ Type, estimated at Euros 2,250,000-3,250,000. With bodywork by the legendary Parisian coachbuilder J Saoutchik, whose styling designs were intricate, versatile and beautiful, the car has many unique features from a disappearing hood mechanism to individual suitcases stowed behind each seat, as well as an ultra low windscreen. With such aesthetics and functionality, it is perhaps easy to see why this car has had just two owners, both in America, since new.

Bonhams will also sell the world’s last surviving Farman motorcar in private ownership. It dates from 1921 and boasts exquisite technologically advanced engineering throughout. The six cylinder, six litre engine car, with four speeds, and four wheel brakes, was initially owned by the Maharajah of Idar, in India. A present from the Maharajah to his brother-in-law, the car has only changed hands twice more in its 87-year history. It will be offered for sale at Euros 500,000-600,000.

For the same estimate, a 1905 Panhard-Levassor, will be available to bid on at the Rétromobile Paris Sale. It is one of just two surviving examples in the world of the 79 built and is expected to fetch Euros 500,000-600,000.

The car is beautifully restored and has been commended for its condition on many occasions. It has also received concours d’elegance prizes, including the French Cup at Pebble Beach, California.
