Mastodon skull auctioned in Dallas for $191,200

A four-tusk mastodon skull said to be the largest of its kind was sold at Dallas-based Heritage Auction Galleries on Sunday for $191,200.

fossilskull.jpgDescribed as the largest four-tusk mastodon skull ever found, the skull was uncovered in a gravel pit near La Grange, southeast of Austin, and was sold in 2004 to Joe Taylor, the owner and curator of the Mt. Blanco Fossil Museum. Taylor, preserved and restored the piece with a team of volunteers.

Another item, a 26-pound solid gold nugget from Mexico known as the Boot of Cortez, sold for nearly $1.6 million, The Dallas Morning News reported.
