Google To Bid In FCC Spectrum Auction

The Federal Communications Commission will allow Internet search engine Google (NASDAQ: GOOG ) to bid in an upcoming auction of wireless airwaves.

The auction is scheduled to begin on January 24 and is expected to raise at least $10 billion for the US Treasury from airwaves that were returned by television broadcasters as they transition to digital signals.

According to FCC documents Google has been cleared to take part in an auction for the 700 megahertz wireless spectrum. The Internet giant said that it plans to bid up to $4.5 billion for airwaves, which it will use to expand its network and services.
