Kenya coffee auction prices rise by 30 percent
Published December 17th, 2007
According to Mr Charles Mwea of Central Kenya Coffee Mills, there was a 30 per cent increase in coffee prices compared to previous auctions. Grade AA coffee went for a record Sh26,000 per 50kg bag while AB grade fetched Sh19,500 per bag. This was a rise of Sh600 and Sh3,300 per bag respectively for the AA and AB grades from the previous auction
“Apart from the high quality coffee, the performance was also driven by demand because this was the last auction of the year,” added Mr Mwea, who is also the Central Kenya Mills chairman.
The batch of coffee that fetched the highest price at the auction in Nairobi was got from three factories in Mathira Division of Nyeri District which are currently implementing an improvement programme known as UTZ certified.
