Poultry auctioneer Fabian Eagle to hold the first sale of live birds since last month’s bird flu outbreak on the Norfolk-Suffolk border.

Mr Eagle will also be selling about 350 lots including rough-plucked turkeys at Holywell Row, near Barton Mills, on Wednesday at 11am.

He said: “I’m delighted that Defra has allowed the sale to go ahead. I know that customers will appreciate this chance to sell live poultry since the first case of avian flu more than a month ago.

“We’ve also got some very good lots of large geese which are in short supply this Christmas and plenty of large cockerels,” said Mr Eagle, of North Pickenham, near Swaffham, who has been selling poultry for about 20 years.

There will be more than 500 lots of turkeys and geese at Key’s auction sale at Aylsham on Wednesday, from 10am.

A show and sales at Diss on Thursday and Friday next week, one of the region’s biggest, will have more than 700 turkeys, geese, chickens and ducks.

Rachael Hipperson, who is arranging the sale in auctioneer TW Gaze’s 150th anniversary year, said: “It is an opportunity to buy some prime poultry from local producers because most of sellers come from within a 10-mile radius of our auction rooms at Diss.

“It is very easy. We always get a good crowd. Just come along and register before the sale if you intend to purchase.”
