Cardamom auctions to get digital

Published November 29th, 2007

Cardamom auctions across India will go the electronic way from the second week of December.
The first step towards this goal was taken by the government trade promotion body, Spices Board, three months ago when it introduced a pilot electronic auction project for cardamom in Bodinaykanur in Tamil Nadu. The board will set up the system in Kerala by next month.
Spices Board has taken on lease the auction centre of trading firm Mas Enterprises Ltd in Idukki district in Kerala. According to Jairam Ramesh, minister of state for commerce, all five existing auction centres in Kerala will now hold their individual weekly auctions at Vandanmedu in Idukki district on different days.

At the Bodinaykanur centre in Tamil Nadu, which went electronic on 23 August, auctions are held twice a week. This essentially means that between the two online centres in Tamil Nadu and Kerala, auctions will be held on all seven days every week.
