Richmond-based art collection to sell in Carmel auction
Published November 17th, 2007
An art collection put together in Richmond in the early 1900s will be sold at auction Saturday in Carmel.
The collection was compiled by Richmond optometrist and art patron Francis H. Edmunds, who lived from 1870 to 1948.
The collection traces to the early 1900s, when Edmunds opened Edmunds Optometry at 10 N. Ninth St., following his employment at Haner’s Jewelry at 810 Main St.
Edmunds’ 1948 obituary in the Richmond Palladium-Item said, “For the past 50 years, he had been interested in art and had in his collection, which is considered one of the finest in this area, more than 150 fine watercolors.
His collection also included a group of fine English paintings and paintings by the late John Elwood Bundy, George Baker, Ellwood Morris and Frank Girardin.”
Also included are two portraits by 19th-century Richmond artist Marcus Mote, depicting members of the Beeler family, relatives of Edmunds’ wife.
Edmunds’ heirs, who are now selling it through Wickliff & Associates Auctioneers Inc. in Carmel, have maintained the collection.
The auction, which also includes jewelry, antique furnishings and other fine art, will begin at 10 a.m. Saturday. The fine art is scheduled to sell at 1 p.m.
Wickliff & Associates Auctioneers is at 12232 Hancock St. in Carmel. Directions and more information about the sale are available on the Web site www.wickliffauctioneers.com or by calling (317) 844-7253.
