The most famous baseball card in the world - the 1909 T206 Honus Wagner that has long been shadowed by controversy and was once owned by NHL superstar Wayne Gretzky - has been sold again to yet another anonymous collector, this time for a record $2.8 million, according to the auction house that says it sold the card.
SCP Auctions of Mission Viejo, Calif., which bought a minority share in the card when Las Vegas businessman Brian Seigel sold it in February for a then-record $2.35 million, announced it had brokered the most recent sale in a press release posted on its Web site today. The company did not identify the collector who had owned the majority interest in the card or the new buyer.
“He does intend to come forward at some point in the next two months and share his intentions for the card,” SCP Auctions spokesman Toby Zwikel said.
