Watercolour by Clive Vernon Blakelock to be auctioned
Published August 24th, 2007
The painting titled Monkseaton Beach with a view towards Whitley Bay and the Spanish City, dated 1920, is to be sold by city auctioneers Anderson and Garland as part of its three-day Country House Sale on September 4, 5 and 6.
The firm’s picture specialist John Anderson, said: “We don’t often get examples of Blakelock’s work for sale, and oddly enough not ones of his home town.
“This one was painted only some six years after he had left his previous job of assistant park superintendent at Southwick, Sunderland, to assume his more important job at Whitley Bay, and he was clearly already in love with his adopted home.
“On his retirement in 1946 he spent five years at Hexham, but he couldn’t settle there and returned to Whitley Bay, where he died in 1955.”
