Cheap food comes at a price, says auctioneer

icWales - A LEADING livestock auctioneer has attacked the “More For Less” society summed up in the Asda supermarket slogan.

John Uffold, of McCartneys auctioneers, told farmers at the annual meeting of the National Sheep Association in Wales that he was not singling out Asda but its slogan epitomised the current attitude to the supply of food and other goods and services.

It appealed to retailers and consumers and was a vote winner for politicians.

“It goes to the very core of the human psyche. Who doesn’t like the idea of more money for less work?” said Mr Uffold.

But he said the fallacy was exposed in the old northern expression - “you don’t get owt for nowt”.

The cost of cheaper goods might be producers meeting higher standards, a labour force working in sweat shops, the environment polluted by factories in China or increased carbon emissions.

“More for less is unsustainable and even a child can see that,” said Mr Uffold.
