Sun Online A CLASSIC car enthusiast bought a Second World War fire engine on a whim and hoped his wife would not notice, he admitted today.
Bob Nabney’s plans were foiled when a journalist called his home in Bournemouth, Dorset and left an answerphone message enquiring about the vehicle.

The 64-year-old taxi driver regularly attends auctions and bought the 1943 Austin K4 engine, complete with 60ft turntable ladder, as a retirement present to himself.

He paid around £6,600 in total at the South Western Vehicle Auctions in Parkstone, Poole on February 6.

Mr Nabney said: “I’m a classic car enthusiast anyway but I bought this on a whim. It’s a lovely machine and well kept. Hopefully I will get it running.
