Peter Doig’s White Canoe fetched a career high of £5,732,000 at the auction in London on Wednesday night.

The sum - five times its estimate and described as “phenomenal” by auctioneers Sotheby’s, is a record for a living European artist and places him alongside British greats such as David Hockney and Lucian Freud.
