Milk auction prices

The Ulster Farmers’ Union says dairy farmers will take some encouragement from this weeks milk auction, where milk prices held up at 2006 levels.

The average milk price at Thursdays milk auction was 17.07 pence per litre, slightly above 2006 levels.

UFU Dairy Policy Chairman Jackson Wright said local dairy farmers were hoping that improving market conditions will stabilise incomes. Mr Wright said; “2006 was a very difficult year with significant CAP Reform cuts in intervention and a series of export refund cuts on dairy products. However we have now passed through that difficult period and market conditions in 2007 are more encouraging, particularly with a buoyant global market for whole milk powder which is our main export product”.
