Kenya - Goat Auction

Published December 30th, 2006

The Kimalel Goat Auction, a brainchild of the former President Moi, was started in 1986 to boost the standards of living of the Baringo District residents.

“Moi wanted people to be self-reliant and the project gained fame because of those who attended the annual auction,” Mr Richard Chebon, the Baringo County Council chairman recalls.

Due to the influence of the former President, the event was always attended by prominent personalities including Cabinet ministers and senior civil servants.

The bidding was high and 50 goats could fetch Sh200, 000 or more. “From the auction, local residents were able to raise school fees and capital for several investments,” Chebon says
