ONE of the first pair of number plates issued in Victoria fetched almost $220,000 at a Melbourne auction tonight.
The plates, pressed in 1910, read “VIC 41″ signifying they were issued for the 41st vehicle registered in the state.
An anonymous phone bidder paid $218,300 for them, and the price includes the right to display them on Victorian roads today.
Auction house Leonard Joel Australia said tonight the pair of black and white plates, measuring 12cm by 14.5cm, had attracted “quite active” bidding.
“The auctioneer started at $100,000 and one of the bidders immediately went to $150,000,” a spokeswoman said.
She said the family selling the plates had purchased them in 1950 affixed to a 1936 V8 Cadillac.
