Football items auctioned

The FA Cup winner’s medal won by Preston North End’s Andy Beattie in 1938 was sold for £4,230 at Bonhams in Chester.
Before the auction, experts predicted that the medal would sell for between £4,000 and £6,000. It was bought by a mystery bidder.
It was the most valuable item in a collection of medals, caps and shirts which belonged to the late Mr Beattie and which sold for a total of £9,014 at the auction.
The Scotland shirt, and the international cap that came with it, worn by Mr Beattie in the 3-1 win against England at Hampden Park, Glasgow, in 1936-1937 – when he was a PNE star – sold for £1,410.
But the 1937/1938 nine carat gold FA Charity Shield runners-up medal that Mr Beattie won with PNE failed to sell.
Two more of his seven Scotland caps sold for £541 each.
