Saipan Vehicle auction generates $18.8K

The government’s car sale yesterday raised less than $20,000-just a little higher than the average cost of fuel burned by the CNMI’s power plants in two hours.
Press secretary Charles P. Reyes Jr. reported yesterday that 21 of the 24 cars placed for bids were sold at the auction.
Cash payments for the cars totaled $18,772.
In comparison, CUC’s fuel expenses total $77.62 million in fiscal year 2006, according to an electric rate study by Ecocomists.com. In other words, CUC spends about $17,720 every two hours on fuel.
Reyes maintained that the car auction would not only generate funds, but also save the government money on fuel, repair and maintenance costs.
The Division of Procurement and Supply received a total of 97 bids for the first batch of 24 used government cars that had been auctioned off.
Most of the cars sold during yesterday’s bid opening were older models.
