An 1842 watercolour by J.M.W. Turner set two saleroom records on Monday as it sold for 5.8 million pounds to an anonymous telephone bidder.
The price paid for the Blue Rigi: Lake of Lucerne more than doubled the world record for a British work of art on paper of 2.6 million pounds, set in 2000 by Dante Gabriel Rossetti’s Pandora.
It also more than doubled the record for a Turner watercolour on paper of 2.04 million pounds, set in 2001 by Heidelberg with a Rainbow.
