As soon as international art saleroom Christie’s announced it was shutting down its operations in Australia last month, two auction houses decided to fill the void.
Sydney-based Bonhams & Goodman will today open an office at the Como Centre in South Yarra in preparation for its first big art auction in Melbourne in September.
A month later, a new Melbourne-based business, Joel Fine Art, will hold its first sale, also aimed at the top end of the market. The firm, a division of the 85-year-old Leonard Joel auctioneers, will be headed by Warren Joel and John Albrecht, former managing director of Kozminsky’s.
