Cornell Student built solar home sold for $121,000
An award-winning solar house built by Cornell University students was sold at auction Friday for $121,000.
The 16-by-40-foot house was purchased by a local buyer from Lansing, who submitted the winning bid over the Internet, said auctioneer Mel Manasse, who could not provide the buyer’s name.
Bidding started at $50,000, he said. The auction attracted more than 200 bids.
In October, the school was awarded second place for the house in the U.S. Department of Energy’s Solar Decathlon competition.
The house has a combination living room/study/kitchen, bedroom, bathroom and numerous nooks and crannies for storage. It features 56 110-watt photovoltaic roof panels, a custom energy-efficient ventilation system, radiant heat floors and a gray-water reuse system.
The house cost $347,000 to build in labor and materials. Cornell students raised $65,000 in cash, mostly from alumni, and obtained $120,000 in product donations from about two dozen companies.
