"Russell Homestead, Oak Hill, Missouri"depictsthe house where Charlie Russell lived as a boy before heading to Montana, where he became famous.
"This very personal painting is a piece of Russell’s own family history," said auctioneer Doug Levis. "It shows the home of his grandfather, James Russell, in Oak Hill, Missouri. Russell lived there until he was 16.
"He created this painting as a gift for his brother, Silas, and it was passed down through the Russell family before eventually being acquired by a collector in southern Alberta," said Levis.
The pre-sale estimate for the painting is $52,000 to $69,000.
At last month’s Russell Auction in Great Falls, a 15-by-18-inch watercolor, "Judith Basin Cowboy," sold for $160,000.
"Russell Homestead" is one of 320 lots for sale at the auction at The Nickle Arts Museum.
