The work, which would have been worth about $6000 when it was painted, will be auctioned as part of Sotheby’s Fine Australian Art sale in Melbourne next month, where it is expected to fetch more than $500,000.
It is among 57 lots - with an estimated total value of up to $7.5 million - unveiled in Sydney yesterday as Sotheby’s drums up customers for its April 11 sale.
Dove and Dusk is not expected to be the most expensive work on sale, but it is certainly one of the most beautiful, and a world away from the angst reflected in many Whiteley paintings.
The chairman of Sotheby’s Australia, Justin Miller, said competition would be tough for the Whiteley work and very few remained in private hands.
