Christie’s is to close in Sydney and Melbourne

A fine art auction on April 10 will be its last scheduled sale, The Australian newspaper reports today.
Christie’s international managing director Lisa King said the company would continue to have staff in Sydney and Melbourne “to ensure clients have continued access to the international art market”.
Ms King said Christie’s Australian operations accounted for just one per cent of its total revenue, and the company wanted to reallocate resources to other areas of potential growth.
The closure would leave Sotheby’s and Deutscher-Menzies as the major art auction houses in Australia, the newspaper said.
Christie’s opened an Australian office in 1969 and became a sales house in 1989.
