Google and future of eBay & Paypal

Published March 5th, 2006

Anything that Google does is much more than news. It directly impacts the lives of millions of entrepreneurs, webmasters and netizens alike. In June 2005, I had written a column titled “Google Plans to Nuke Paypal”. You can view it here thebusinessedition.com. There were noises if this was part of some corporate communication plan of Google to scare Paypal and submit itself to Google?

Ten months down they have finally done it. In fact, the whole affair has been done in the true subtle Google style. Google has expanded its online payment service so that users can buy and sell everything from clothes to recipes to just about anything on Google Base. Sounds so nice except that now the future of eBay and Paypal is at stake.

Google Base

Launched in November 2005, Google Base is a place where you can easily submit all types of online and offline content that they host and make searchable online. You can describe any item you post with attributes, which will help people find it when they search Google Base. In fact, based on the relevance of your items, the items may also be included in the main Google search index and other Google products like Froogle, Google Base and Google Local.

Google added the payment service to its upcoming Google Base classified listings Friday, an expected move that nonetheless sends shockwaves through the Internet industry.
