Camera With “eBay” Mode

Published March 3rd, 2006

“The eBay Best Shot mode automatically sets a camera to close-up mode, and sets image quality to 2MP resolution and Normal JPEG compression. Apparently, the logic behind this mode is as follows: Lots of people take pictures of objects they want to sell on eBay, and they make lots of mistakes. Sometimes the images are out of focus, poorly lit, and oversized. So if a camera has a switch that sets it to take perfect close-up photos at the right resolution and quality, all those millions of eBay sellers out there will rush out and buy it. Of course, the pictures they take might look just as horrible as before, especially if the object they are selling is a car, piece of furniture, or even a cigar-store Indian. These larger objects might look a bit blurry if taken in close-up mode, and small, shiny objects like jewelry won’t look good at all when lit by the direct flash on the camera.”
